Dr. Ofer Bergman is a senior lecturer at the Department of Information Science, Bar-Ilan University.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://is.biu.ac.il/en/bergman )〕 His research interests include Personal Information Management (PIM), Human-Computer Interaction, and Information Behavior.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://scholar.google.co.il/citations?user=TnoHcksAAAAJ&hl=en )〕 He had written over 30 scientific publications which had been cited by over 500 papers and his current h-index is 12.〔 He received several grants and awards including the Best JASIST Paper Award,〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.asis.org/awards/jasis_paper.html )〕 and the Google Faculty Research Award.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://services.google.com/fh/files/blogs/research_awards_recipients_july_2012.pdf )〕 His main scientific contributions are the development of the User-subjective approach which is the first design approach developed specifically for PIM systems,〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.user-subjective.com/ )〕 the evaluation of the use of search and tagging in personal information management, as well as developing a new research technique called Elicited Personal Information Retrieval (EPIR) which enabled the study topics such as: the effect of folder structure on file navigation, the amount of cognitive attention used in navigation compared to search and sharing files using common repositories compared to sharing files via email. Dr. Bergman is among the first information science researchers to use neuroimaging to study neurological correlations of information behaviors. In a recent study he led with Dr. Yael Benn, published in Nature Scientific Reports, they demonstrated the neurological bases for navigation preference over search for personal information retrieval. Their results indicated that during folder navigation, people use the same brain structures that have evolved over millions of years for navigating in the physical world, leaving the language system available for other tasks. In contrast search involved activation of Broka's area which is associated with linguistic processin. This study resonated in public media including the Daily Mail, and The Wall Street Journal.
